With One Eye Open explores the role of photography within graffiti culture. For this new exhibition in Heerlen, The Netherlands, we focus on a theme deeply connected to the city: Industrial Landscapes.
Mining and heavy industry have shaped Heerlen and the Parkstad region, and their traces are still visible today. These post-industrial rail zones and in-between spaces hold a special attraction for graffiti writers. Areas hidden from the public eye, with walls, industrial structures and freight trains as the perfect backdrop. Here, writers can work undisturbed, and as these places slowly disappear through time or redevelopment, the photograph becomes the only tangible evidence.
The exhibition brings together artists and photographers whose work captures the raw beauty and aesthetic of these industrial environments — where industrial heritage and graffiti culture intersect.

With One Eye Open
At Pennings (Eindhoven, NL)
The first exhibition of With One Eye Open was held in Pennings Foundation, Eindhoven, The Netherlands from September 7 till November 30 2024.
The exhibition was one of the first and perhaps the most comprehensive overview exhibitions about the visual documentation of graffiti and the graffiti scene. It revealed the complete story behind the pieces, as well as the changing role of photography and video as documentation tools over the decades.
We brought together the work of young emerging talents and established photographers from the graffiti scene in the exhibition. The public got a unique insight into a normally very closed world and travelled from afar to visit the exhibition.
Curation and design by Jasper van Es.
The exhibition was supported by Mondriaan Fonds, Het Cultuurfonds Noord-Brabant and Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven.
Participating photographers and graffiti artists:
Alex Fakso, Analog Delinquents, Edward Nightingale, Good Guy Boris, Martha Cooper, Potato and Onion, Fuzi, Ikarus & Errorflict, Jon, Luke da Duke, Moses & Taps, NAWAS, Our Side Of The Story, Stijn van Leest & Bryan Stoel, Ralph Roelse, RDJ, Tripl / Furious.
As part of the exhibition, we also showcased the series.
